MOTchk Privacy Policy

MOTchk (“the extension”, “we”, “us”) is a Chrome browser extension that helps UK car buyers check MOT history for vehicles listed on AutoTrader.co.uk.
What data we access
When you visit a car listing page on AutoTrader.co.uk, MOTchk reads publicly visible content on that page — including the vehicle’s make, model, year, and (where you enter it) registration plate — in order to display a MOT history score for that specific car.
What data we collect and store
Registration plates you enter are stored locally on your device so you don’t need to re-enter them when revisiting the same listing. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to us for any purpose beyond running the MOT history check you requested.
MOT history results are cached locally on your device for 24 hours to avoid repeated lookups for the same vehicle.
We do not collect your name, email address, location, browsing history outside of AutoTrader.co.uk, or any other personally identifiable information.
Third-party data requests
To retrieve MOT history data, MOTchk sends the registration plate you enter to our backend service, which queries the UK government’s official DVSA MOT history database on your behalf. This request contains only the registration plate — no other personal information about you is included or transmitted.
Affiliate links
MOTchk may display links to third-party services such as insurance, warranty, or finance providers. If you click one of these links, you will be taken to that provider’s website, which has its own separate privacy policy. We do not transfer any of your personal data to these providers. We may earn a commission if you complete a purchase through these links; this does not affect the price you pay.
Data we do not collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit your browsing history outside of AutoTrader.co.uk, personal identification information, financial or payment information, location data, or behavioural tracking data such as keystrokes or mouse activity.
Data sharing
We do not sell or share your data with third parties, except as necessary to perform the MOT history lookup described above.
